The Constitution Heart Of A Governing Body - 3215 Words

DeJuan Isaiah Ms. Terry English 12 27 October 2014 The Constitution: Heart of a Governing Body What makes politics so important to the United States? When hearing the word â€Å"politics†, the president and first family are generally what comes to mind. Of course the president plays an important role but there are lots of other key factors that contribute to politics. There are three branches of government, each with its own special and specific role. The legislative branch writes and creates laws, the judicial branch judge’s laws and the executive branch enforces these laws. The president belongs to the executive branch and plays several different roles in office. The constitution plays a very prominent role in politics as well. Government†¦show more content†¦The loving hearts in people will start to hurt because of the way things are set up and functioning in the United States. In the field of politics, the constitution essentially serves as a guideline or code of conduct for government officials. Over time many modifications have been made that differ from the constitutional founders’ intent. Both Democratic and Republican parties are said to be the blame for this due to their difference in beliefs and values. At length, 225 years ago, on September 17, 1787, the delegates of the Constitutional Convention signed their names to the final draft of the United States Constitution. Less than a year later, on June 21, 1788, when New Hampshire became the 9th state to ratify it, it became, as it states in its own Article VI, the supreme law of the land. All these years later, few of us realize how cantankerous the arguments were that brought this document into being. This country was founded on the articles of confederation which was ratified in 1781. A first for a nation, it served as a charter. By those articles, the thirteen British colonies referred to themselves as â€Å"states† to signify their autonomy and bound themselves into a Union with one another. The main topic of discussion became the lack of a strong central. With no central authority the confederation could not function properly. W.E.B. Dubois Essay - 823 Words

W.E.B. Dubois The great African American intellectual W.E.B. Dubois was born in the post-Civil War era. Being born at this time encouraged him to fight for equal rights for blacks. At this time, blacks were still suppressed very greatly. Dubois, having had lived in an all black community, experienced racism first-hand in the North (Donalson, 558). His studies led to his book, The Philadelphia Negro. This writing merely explained crime in black communities. He explained that bla cks were not the cause of crime, just a symptom (Hynes, 12). Dubois had a deep analytical perspective for the black culture as a whole. He began to teach economics at Atlanta University (Wager, 3). In this time period, Dubois accomplishments were uncommon for an African American. He had to be tenacious and goal-oriented to make such accomplishments. In 1903, Dubois published The Soul of Black Folks (Saltys Stamps, 4). This book illustrates how demeaning it is for blacks to beg for basic rights that inherently belong to them. This book encouraged him to meet with black scholars whom he named the talented tenth. In 1905, he began to meet with these scholars to discuss civil rights issues (Lewis, 1). These meeting were known as the Niagara Movement (Lewis, 1). After five years of meeting the NAACP was formed and Dubois was Director of Publicity and Research (Lewis, 1). In 1919, he sailed to France to be an NAACP observer of the Peace Conference (Lewis, 2). While in France he decided to form four Pan-African congresses which failed. Thomas Jefferson The Man, The Myth, And The Moral Essay Example For Students

Thomas Jefferson: The Man, The Myth, And The Moral Essay ityThomas Jefferson was a man of the greatest moral character who has beenexcoriated routinely over the last 30 years by historical revisionistsand presentists. His commitment to America and his vast contributions tothe framing of society as it is today are overlooked in favor of baseanalysis of his character that, while not flawless, is that of a morallyupright person who has deeply held convictions and lives by them. Jefferson was born to a prominent family of Virginia tobacco growers. Plantation life is based largely around the work of slaves, so Jeffersonwas surrounded by them from the time of his birth in 1743 until the dayhe died. One of the harshest criticisms of Jefferson comes from the factthat, while he vehemently opposed slavery, was indeed a slave ownerhimself. As historian Douglas L. Wilson points out in his AtlanticMonthly article Thomas Jefferson and the Character Issue, the questionshould be reversed: This was of asking the question is essentially backward, andreflects the pervasive presentism of our time. Consider, for example, how different the question appears when inverted and framed in morehistorical terms: How did a man who was born into a slave holdingsociety, whose family and admired friends owned slaves, who inherited afortune that was dependent on slaves and slave labor, decide at an earlyage that slavery was morally wrong and forcefully declare that it oughtto be abolished? (Wilson 66). We will write a custom essay on Thomas Jefferson: The Man, The Myth, And The Moral specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Wilson also argues that Jefferson knew that his slaves would be betteroff working for him than freed in a world where they would be treatedwith contempt and not given any real freedoms. Another way that Thomas Jefferson shows his moral character is in hismost famous achievement, the drafting of the Declaration ofIndependence. This document is probably the most important document inthe history of the United States, and one of the most important in thehistory of the world. Jefferson writes that all men are created equaland argues that every man has the right to life, liberty, and thepursuit of happiness. Jeffersons document shows not only his stronglyheld beliefs in freedom, but his acceptance of and belief in the viewsof the Age of Reason. He believed himself to be a person who was doingwhat was morally right, not for the fame that would eventually accompanyit. In fact, he didnt want to write the Declaration to begin with. In1776, the song Not Me, John shows how Jefferson was pushed into doingit, despite the fact that he would have actually rather gone home to seehis wife. When nobody else would do it, he acquiesced and agreed towrite it. His quote, What will posteri ty think we were demigods? Were men no more, no less (1776), shows how as a contemporary ofsuch philosophical greats as Voltaire and Mill, he did what he didbecause it was what needed to happen not in any way, shape, or formbecause he wanted to be remembered as a demigod, a status he actuallyhad anyway, according to Wilson, until the 1960s. Another thing that Jeffersons character is criticized for and blownout of proportion is his liaison with a slave, Sally Hemings. HistorianFawn Brodie argues that it was not scandalous debauchery with aninnocent slave victim, but rather a serious passion that broughtJefferson and the slave woman much happiness over a period lastingthirty-eight years. True, their affair started when she was only 14years old, but to criticize this is terribly presentistic. In colonialtimes, especially in the middle and southern colonies, girls weremarried off between the ages of 13 and 16; it was not considereddefilement and abuse like it is today. In fact, his relationship withHemings could actually be considered to be a positive thing for him ontwo fronts: Since she was 52 when he died, Jefferson obviously did notlust after her solely on a physical basis; also, he promised his wifewhen she died that he would not remarry. He fulfilled his promise onlybecause he found a woman to love whom he was not exp ected, indeed notallowed, to marry. This is a weak front on which to criticize Jefferson. .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 , .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .postImageUrl , .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 , .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:hover , .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:visited , .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:active { border:0!important; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:active , .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749 .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7ce7e01d800654e7c0e0f755cdf6e749:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Leadership EssayGiven Jeffersons contributions to American society, it is almostimpossible to find him to be morally weak and coarse. Ken from Whose Life Is It Anyway Persuading the Judge to Let Him Die Essays

Ken from Whose Life Is It Anyway Persuading the Judge to Let Him Die Essays Ken from Whose Life Is It Anyway Persuading the Judge to Let Him Die Essay Ken from Whose Life Is It Anyway Persuading the Judge to Let Him Die Essay In this essay. I will be depicting and analyzing how Ken. from whose life is it anyway . used persuasive techniques to carry the justice to allow him decease. Ken is seeking to carry the justice to allow him decease. and he persuades him with this quotation mark †¦and I find the hospital’s relentless attempt to keep this shadow of life an indignity and its humane. this quotation mark is clearly demoing that he does non desire to trust on other people. The word maintain stands for keeping something like an object in your family. He does non desire the infirmary and the physicians to maintain his shadow of life because he thinks that he is dead already . In the quotation mark †¦but the self-respect starts with their pick. If I chose to populate. it would be shocking if society killed me. If I chose to decease. its every bit dismaying if society keeps me alive. This quotation mark shows that he cares about other people non merely himself. The word society is used because it shows that he thinks genuinely non merely about himself. Besides there is a word choose . this clearly shows that there is no average verbs and it is more effectual and affectional. as that word. it self. shows that he thought everything though what he existent said. I like the manner Ken uses strong words like appalling . by stating this. he is overstating and by making this. he is flooring. Ken doesn’t thing allowing person unrecorded although they’re against it is awful. but the fact that they don’t acquire the pick. The inhuman treatment doesn’t reside on salvaging person or leting them to decease. It resides in the fact that the pick is removed from the adult male concerned this quotation mark means precisely how ken feels at that minute. The pick is about to be taken from him. and that will do things even harder for him. The word cruelty is a really strong word. Using it. Ken. creates sympathy and it made the whole quotation mark more persuasive and he was stating that people are cruel by taking the pick from him. Besides I this quotation mark. he is saying by utilizing words like is . fact . it resides . All of these are average verbs and show that he knows what he is speaking about and is confident with what he thinks and knows. The writer chose the techniques for a ground. and the grounds are that the whole fact about carrying the justice needs to be pointed out as it’s the most of import spot in the narrative drama. the justice will judge from whether to salvage the adult male or allow him decease as he wanted. It’s a life or decease state of affairs. Ken besides uses rhetorical inquiries to do the justice think. Is that surprising? Ken said this on intent as it is really effectual persuasive technique like in the 1. Rhetorical inquiries overall. start statements and arguments in which this narrative is all about. Overall I think that the justice did the right thing allowing ken dice. He would be enduring mentally and physically if he didn’t. This narrative has many different composing techniques and merely really few I have analysed in this essay. I think they are really effectual upon this narrative and the narrative wouldn’t make sense and so much play if it didn’t.

The Calcutta Chromosome Science Fiction and Technology essays

The Calcutta Chromosome Science Fiction and Technology essays This novel was written by a social anthropologist, Amitav Ghosh, who is also a skilled literary craftsman when it comes to the precision and clarity of his narrative style. So, knowing his anthropological background and expertise, a reader goes into a book with a little different sense of anticipation; science will surely be a prominent part of the books theme. And also, I am enjoying reading the novel and observing the two types of cultures Western and Eastern cultures and how each of those cultures views and responds to technology and science. The plot is made very interesting in a diverse way, because there are characters whose cultural backgrounds are very different from the places and cultures that they are living in; for example, far from his real cultural place of residence is Antar, an Egyptian (Eastern culture), who resides in Manhattan (western culture). His job is to research artifacts (from many cultures) through the medium of cyberspace, which is a kind of other-worldly technology culture that allows individuals of all cultures to interact digitally, but never to actually speak verbally to one another, see one another, or pass judgment other than through the written word. Meanwhile, keeping to a diversity of east-west cultural contrasts, Ghosh stumbles across the image on his computer screen of an Indian whose name is Murugan, who is presumed to have disappeared in 1995, and was considered an obsessive researcher in regard to the life and scientific achievements of a Britisher named Ronald Ross, known as Sir Ronald Ross, since he was given that title by the Queen of England after winning the Nobel Prize for science. Murugan, according to a review in the Christian Science Monitor (Rosenberg, 1998), was an engaging character an obsessive verging on madness, but also a raconteur with a delicious instinct for lifes absurdities in general and colonial hypocrisy in particular."...

Poof Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Poof - Essay Example First, it is evident that the play depicts men as traditionally violent and dictatorial especially against their wives and members of the female gender. Nottage depicts this from the first scene of the play with the violent shouting from Samuel commanding his wife to disappear. In this case, it is evident that the play depicts Samuel as a traditional man who abuses his wife all through despite the seriousness of what he identifies as mistakes. The traditional role of women doing everything for their men is evident whereby Samuel expects his wife to do all her chores and he cannot even engage in simple tasks such as picking up the shirts he will wear the following day (Nottage, n.d.). in doing this, Nottage appears to advance the traditional role of women as being ‘helpers’ to their husbands with their husbands playing a superior role than women, even in a society whereby women are increasingly competing with their male counterparts in various fields that were previously deemed as a forte for their male counterparts. Revisiting Loureen’s reaction following the disappearance of Samuel, it is evident that the play associates women with the traditional roles of child caring and housekeeping as the primary functions that women should play in a relationship, and most importantly in a marriage. Loureen tells her husband that he promised to be good once he came back and asks him to come back so that the two could sit down and iron out their issues. She thinks that she is responsible for the disappearance of her husband despite cursing him at the beginning of the play, which is indication that she has accepted her traditional female role, which is a theme that Nottage advances throughout the play. To some extent, the play appears to support the traditional aspect of women accepting to undergo abuse by their husband while accepting blame for situations that they did not have control over the outcome. In this case, women appear to be submissive to their husbands. The character of Florence, who is Loureen’s upstairs neighbor, further advances the traditional role of women as being dutiful to their husbands and being subordinates to their husbands. Her first expression after hearing of the purported murder was a feeling of pure illusion since she could not imagine that a woman had the capacity to confront their husband leave alone committing murder and killing their husbands. In this case, Nottage identifies women as traditionally powerless to their male counterparts with wives not given a chance to confront their husbands and express their emotions while disagreeing with the behavior of their husbands. In
